A winter storm from the Midwest threatens to bring snow to the South this weekend.
While some are hoping for snow to fall in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia, meteorologists anticipate seeing mixed fallout across the states from the storm, named Winter Storm Izzy by the Weather Channel. Southern and Eastern states should expect to experience rain followed by ice and snow on Sunday.
“Wintry weather is expected across the Appalachians and parts of the Eastern Seaboard, but uncertainty remains with precipitation type in some areas and with the location of the heaviest snow,” the Weather Prediction Center said in its Thursday forecast for the weekend.

Winter storm warnings, watches, and advisories were issued for Minnesota and North Dakota on Thursday, the Weather Channel reported. The snow will spread southeastward on Friday, toward Nebraska and Iowa, with the storm passing over eastern Nebraska, Iowa, northern Missouri, and western Illinois Friday night.

The storm is expected to continue traveling southeastward. It may affect North and South Carolina, Virginia, and even Georgia as early as Sunday. While the storm may shift course over the weekend, Winter Storm Izzy may break Atlanta’s record of going without snow.
“It has been 1454 days since the last time our Atlanta site has seen measurable snowfall, good enough for the 2nd longest streak on record,” the Atlanta National Weather Service tweeted on Tuesday.
There is an equally likely chance of things freezing over. “Chances are also increasing for a potentially significant icing event, especially from parts of far northern Georgia, through the western Carolinas, and into south-central Virginia,” said the WPC in its Thursday forecast.

There is also the likelihood of strong winds threatening to down trees and power lines over the weekend due to icings, the WPC predicts.
Additional watches and advisories will be issued to the South and East as the storm moves across the United States over the weekend and as meteorologists refine their forecasts.
