House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tested positive for COVID-19 and is asymptomatic, her office said Thursday, a day after she attended an event at the White House in close proximity to President Joe Biden.
Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said in a statement that after previously testing negative earlier this week, the California Democrat, 82, “received a positive test result for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic.”

“The Speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted, and is thankful for the robust protection the vaccine has provided,” Hammill said. “The Speaker will quarantine consistent with CDC guidance, and encourages everyone to get vaccinated, boosted and test regularly.”
Pelosi was reportedly not in attendance at the Gridiron Club dinner last Saturday, which has become the source of an outbreak among some elected officials. She was, however, in attendance at a White House event Wednesday, where she appeared in close proximity to Biden and other Democratic lawmakers, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, while unmasked. She also attended an event with Biden and former President Barack Obama on Tuesday and was pictured embracing the president.

A White House spokesperson said Thursday that Biden tested negative for COVID-19 on Wednesday evening.
Pelosi was previously scheduled to lead a congressional delegation on a trip to Asia on Thursday, which Hammill added has now been postponed.
