Top Democrat reverses course on impeachment

A top Democrat is walking back his comments that Democrats would eventually impeach President Trump, now saying that he could not be “farther away” from supporting impeachment.

“I’m probably farther away from impeachment than anybody in our caucus,” House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said Monday.

“We will not get out in front of our committees. We’ll see what the committees come up with. I’ve said that forever.”

Clyburn told Politico that impeachment proceedings are not assured.

The lawmaker’s most recent comments contrast remarks he made Sunday, when he said he wants to wait for the right timing to begin impeachment proceedings.

“I never said he should not be impeached,” Clyburn told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “What I said time and time again is Mueller has developed the grounds for impeachment. The House has to determine the timing for impeachment. There’s a big difference.”

Clyburn and other top House Democrats held a private leadership meeting Monday night, in which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood firm in her opposition to launching impeachment proceedings now, despite increasing pressure from the caucus.
