Former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio said he has filed election papers to try and win back his former position in Maricopa County.
Arpaio, who was pardoned by President Trump, said he submitted nearly 10,000 petition signatures on Tuesday to the Maricopa County Elections Department to be able to appear on the primary ballot. He said in August he would seek reelection.
“I will work tirelessly to earn each and every vote from the people of Maricopa County,” he said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to serving another term as Sheriff in order to bring criminals to justice, protect the citizenry, enforce all the laws, and Make Maricopa County Safe Again.”
The primary is scheduled for Aug. 4.
Arpaio lost his bid for reelection in 2016 and was found guilty of criminal contempt for ignoring a court order in a racial profiling case. Trump pardoned him before he was sentenced.
He ran for Senate in 2018 but lost to Sen. Martha McSally in the Republican primary.
