Rudy Giuliani: I said Michael Cohen was honest before I knew he secretly recorded clients

President Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani on Monday said his change in opinion on Michael Cohen could be compared to President George Washington’s thoughts on Benedict Arnold before and after he betrayed the American Continental Army to the British.

When asked about his flip-flop on calling Trump’s former lawyer Cohen an honest man, and now calling him a “pathological liar,” Giuliani said he called Cohen honest before he knew that he was secretly recording his clients.

“George Washington would have said that about Benedict Arnold at a certain point of time. What are you picking on me for? Saying he was an honest, honorable man when I didn’t know he tape recorded conversations with his clients, he was shaking people down for money, he was lying about things on a tape, he was manipulating or doctoring tapes? I didn’t know any of that when I said it. Like George Washington didn’t know that Benedict Arnold was a traitor,” Giuliani said on CNN Monday morning.

Last week it was reported that Cohen had a habit of recording his meetings with clients, and one recording, released by Cohen’s lawyer Lanny Davis, was played on CNN. In the audio tape, Trump can be heard discussing with Cohen the payoff of Playboy model Karen McDougal, when Giuliani previously claimed Trump was not involved with the payment.
