White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Wednesday she’s still optimistic that President Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un will meet next month, but said if the meeting falls through, the U.S. is prepared to continue the “maximum pressure campaign” against the North.
“We’re still hopeful that the meeting will take place and we’ll continue down that path,” Sanders told Fox News Wednesday when asked about rumblings in North Korea that it might scrap the meeting.
“The president is ready if the meeting takes place,” she said. “And if it doesn’t, we will continue the maximum pressure campaign that’s been ongoing.”
According to South Korean media, North Korea has threatened to cancel the June meeting in Singapore with Trump, and has already canceled a Wednesday discussions with South Korea.
North Korea canceled the talks with South Korea and threatened to cancel the summit with the U.S. following ongoing military drills between the U.S. and South Korea, according the South Korean news report.
