House Judiciary summons Mueller to testify on May 23

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler formally summoned special counsel Robert Mueller to testify before the panel “no later than May 23.”

Nadler, a Democrat from New York, sent a letter to Mueller as Attorney General William Barr briefed reporters on Mueller’s 300-plus page report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, which found no collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

Barr said Thursday he does not object to Mueller testifying.

Earlier Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called on Mueller to testify before Congress and accused Barr of handling the report in a partisan manner.

Nadler echoed those comments after Barr spoke.

“It is clear Congress and the American people must hear from Special Counsel Robert Mueller in person to better understand his findings,” Nadler said via Twittter. “We are now requesting Mueller to appear before House Judiciary as soon as possible.”

Congressional Democrats have long contended the Trump administration has tried to obfuscate and muddy the waters in the Russia investigation. Trump and his team say Democrats are desperate to pin something on him after being absolved by Mueller’s crew.

In addition to summoning Mueller to speak to the House Judiciary Committee, Democratic lawmakers on that panel also want the completely unredacted version of the special counsel’s report.
