Retail giant Nordstrom announced Monday night that it will temporarily close its stores due to the spread of the coronavirus.
“The health and safety of our customers and employees remain our top priority as we continue to make decisions during this rapidly evolving situation. We’re taking decisive actions across the business to help protect employees, customers and others in the communities we serve,” said CEO Erik Nordstrom in prepared remarks in the closing announcement.
The temporary closures begin Tuesday and will last for two weeks. It will include Nordstrom full-line, Nordstrom Rack, Trunk Club clubhouses, and Jeffrey in the United States and Canada, according to the announcement.
Workers will receive their wages and benefits during this period.
Online purchases will still be available from the retailer.
Nordstrom’s announcement comes as several other retailers have shuttered their doors because of the virus. The list includes Apple, Nike, and Patagonia. Disney retail stores are closed beginning Tuesday. Abercrombie & Fitch has closed its stores until March 28. Footwear store Allbirds is closed until March 27. Luggage startup Away is also closed.
Store closures are likely to continue until the coronavirus is under control.
