These are the banned Twitter accounts conservatives want Elon Musk to bring back

Conservatives are pushing Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, to make significant changes to the platform, with a focus on free speech and bringing back controversial users who have been banned.

Conservatives have said Twitter is biased based on its suppression of news regarding Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 election and for deplatforming conservatives, most notably former President Donald Trump.

Musk has vowed to overhaul the platform to orient it toward free speech, which he says is fundamental to a functioning democracy. His takeover could also nudge other social media giants to censor less content in order to remain relevant, conservatives hope.

Prominent conservatives, such as firebrand Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, said the first step Musk should take at Twitter is to restore free speech policies to the platform and allow major Republicans and right-wing individuals to return.

“Bring back President Trump. Bring back my personal account. Bring back Dr. Robert Malone. Bring back Alex Jones. Bring back Milo Yiannopoulos,” Greene said on Twitter.

CEO Parag Agrawal told Twitter staff earlier this week that there would be no major changes to the platform with regard to content moderation, censorship, layoffs, or any other significant matters until Musk takes over the company fully in approximately six months.

Republicans are pushing Musk to allow all elected officials back on Twitter, even if they have been banned from the platform in the past for violating its content moderation rules.

“This is a huge win against the woke mob and haters of free speech! I would encourage Elon Musk to immediately: Allow all factually true and legal content to be posted — Restore the accounts of all duly elected government officials,” said Republican Rep. Jim Banks of Indiana.

Some users, however, have avoided suspension and censorship despite using violence-inciting language or violating Twitter’s content rules, such as members of the leftist group antifa, the ayatollah of Iran, and China‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are many well-known individuals and organizations that have been banned from Twitter that conservatives have called to bring back, including Dr. Robert Malone, a controversial virologist and immunologist; Alex Jones, a radio show host and prominent conspiracy theorist; Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist for Trump; James O’Keefe, a conservative political activist and founder of Project Veritas; and the Babylon Bee, a conservative humor publication.

Conservatives say many of these prominent users on Twitter have been unfairly banned in the past few years and that allowing them to return to the platform should be Musk’s top priority.

“The bare minimum of what Musk should do is undo the bad stuff the current Twitter administration is doing and free the people who were unfairly banned or restricted in all sorts of ways,” said Dan Gainor, vice president at the Media Research Center, a conservative media watchdog that tracks censorship on Big Tech platforms.

“He’s also got to deal with the staff, those enforcing the unfair content rules, in order to get rid of the current restrictions and let people back on the platforms,” Gainor said.

Gainor also suggested that Musk focus on reining in the power of fact-checkers at Twitter who he said have unfairly censored conservatives.

Some conservatives are already returning to Twitter, thanks in part to Musk’s purchase of the platform.

Fox News hosts Mark Levin and Tucker Carlson returned to Twitter on Monday after Musk’s deal with the social media platform was announced.

“Thanks to new ownership, I’ve decided to come back!” tweeted Levin, who left the platform last January over what he called “Twitter’s fascism.”
