Former Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson is throwing her support behind entrepreneur Andrew Yang for the Iowa caucuses after dropping out of the primary.
Williamson, a motivational speaker and spiritual leader, announced her plans to support the tech executive, calling him “light in tone” but “deep in substance,” in the first-in-the-nation voting state in an Instagram post on Thursday.
“The Democratic field is filled with good, solid presidential candidates this year. And the choice is difficult,” Williamson began in the first of a series of posts. “This isn’t to tell you who I’m endorsing, because at this point I’m not endorsing anyone.”
Williamson, 67, said she respected both Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren but decided to support Yang, 45, in the Iowa event because of his grasp of policy issues and disposition.
“Three personality characteristics define how Andrew comes across. They are self-confidence, levity, and positivity,” Williamson wrote. “Such things are every bit as important as where he stands on [the] issues, because at a time like this the issues aren’t the only issue.”
“I’m lending my support to Andrew in Iowa, hopefully to help him get past the early primaries & remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. We need that this year. We need to lighten up on a personal level, because the moment is so serious on a political level,” Williamson continued.
