Former state Rep. Connie Conway has won a special election to fill former Rep. Devin Nunes’s seat in California’s 22nd District until January.
Conway was strongly favored to win against her Democratic challenger Lourin Hubbard, a state Water Department manager. She will likely be the last representative of the Republican stronghold in California’s Central Valley because the district will look radically different due to redistricting starting in January 2023. Nunes announced his departure from Congress to run former President Donald Trump’s Truth Social last December.

Conway earned endorsements from Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and she is well known among California Republicans after serving in the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2014.
Though Conway’s House tenure will be short, neither she nor Hubbard ran in any primary for a full House term in a new district. She said that if there was a chance for Republicans to stay in power, Nunes wouldn’t have left.
“I didn’t always have a desire to run, to serve in Congress,” she said. “It was hard for people to grasp: ‘Why are you only running for six months?’ If there was a place to be, Congressman Nunes would have stayed, and he would be there.”

The contest moved to a runoff election after Conway failed to nab 50% or more of the April primary vote. She received about 35% of the vote, while Hubbard moved forward with 19.4%.
The new 22nd District will lean Democratic by 13 points.
