Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., Monday agreed with French President Emmanuel Macron that it would be a mistake for the U.S. to leave the Iran nuclear deal without a feasible alternative in place.
“We can talk about getting out of it, but what do we have to gain at this stage of the game? We’ve already delivered the funds, they’ve already been using the funds that were there,” Rounds, who voted against the President Barack Obama-era agreement, told Fox News when asked about comments Macron made to the cable news network Sunday.
“This was not a good deal in the first place. The president is absolutely correct, it was a bad deal, but it’s a deal that’s been made and we’ve delivered a lot of resources to them already,” he continued.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, agreed to by the U.S., U.K., Russia, France, China, Germany, and Iran, is expected to be a top line agenda item this week as President Trump meets with Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Their discussions precede a May 12 deadline for European allies to commit to improving the 2015 arrangement before Trump follows through on his promise to walk away from it.
