Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is embracing NASCAR’s lone black driver, Bubba Wallace, after he led the effort to ban images of the Confederate flag at race events.
In his newsletter, which also included applause for anti-police protests, Biden praised Wallace for his stance, which was quickly endorsed by NASCAR.
“NASCAR took a big step in the right direction last week when it banned display of Confederate flags at sporting events and properties. It was the right thing to do, and it sent a loud message that hate has no place in this country and inclusivity in sporting events matters,” said Biden.
He added of Wallace, “I applaud this young man for moving this sport, and this country, forward.”
Biden’s endorsement follows those of several Black Lives Matter supporters, including Spike Lee and Demi Lovato.
Wallace, racing for Richard Petty Motorsports, drove his No. 43 Chevy at Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He completed the race and came in 13th place, scoring 24 points. It was painted with sponsor World Wide Technology’s colors. On June 10, he raced in a car that carried the Black Lives Matter logo.
