Former FBI Director James Comey told Attorney General Jeff Sessions he did not want to be left alone with President Trump following a meeting where the president requested Comey end the investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn, according to a report on Tuesday.
Comey’s reasoning behind the request stemmed from the belief that it was up to Sessions to keep the FBI detached from White House influence, current and former law enforcement officials told the New York Times. Comey pulled Sessions aside in February to tell him he thought the interactions between himself and bureau and the president were not appropriate.
Sessions reportedly told Comey that he couldn’t guarantee that Trump wouldn’t attempt to meet with the FBI director alone again.
However, according to the report, Comey didn’t revealed to Sessions what occurred during his private meeting with the president that made him feel uncomfortable.
Comey was fired by Trump last month amid his agency’s probe into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
