All the talk about the tough new Arizona immigration bill seems to have gotten Sen. John McCain’s tongue in a twist.
The Arizona Republican chatted about the controversial measure, which critics say will promote racial profiling, on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday.
“The state of Arizona is acting and doing what they feel they need to do in light of the fact that the federal government is not fulfilling its fundamental responsibility to secure our borders,” McCain said.
O’Reilly then posed a racial profiling query.
“I would be very sorry … if some of that happens,” McCain said. Then he went on: “It’s the people whose homes and property are being violated,” he said. “It’s the drive-by that — the drivers of cars with illegals in it that are intentionally causing accidents on the freeway.”
McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said the comments referred to vehicles carrying illegal immigrants that are involved in dangerous law enforcement pursuits, according to AzCentral.com.
