New suit, new life: Foundation keeps D.C. women dressed for success

It may just look like a simple suit, but to the Washington women who have been given outfits by D.C.’s Dress for Success, that suit opened doors to a new lifestyle.

“You feel like you’re rich, because you have a personal shopper” gushed Eboni Young-Meekins, showing appreciation for the organization, which celebrated its seventh anniversary Monday with a luncheon at the W Hotel.

Young-Meekins found herself unemployed and on government assistance after a tough pregnancy. Enter Dress for Success, which provided Young-Meekins with a shopper, a suit and some guidance so that she was able to get a new gig.

Michelle Fenty, wife of D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, was among those cheering the charity.

“It’s so important for that job candidate to look professional in order to get that job, but also to feel socially accepted and professionally attired once she has received a job,” said Fenty.

Since 2002, Dress for Success has provided “clothing and confidence,” according to Fenty, to 6,500 area women.
