Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday that the state Department of Transportation will raise the speed limit on 680 miles of interstate highways to 70 miles-per-hour by the end of the year.
McDonnell described the move as “one step forward” in improving the state’s transportation system.
“The increase in the speed limit from 65 to 70 mph in rural and less populated areas of the state will help Virginians arrive at their destinations quicker and safer and will speed the delivery of goods and services throughout the commonwealth,” McDonnell said.
The General Assembly approved the increase in March. VDOT studied nearly 800 miles of highways for potential increases, with review and input provided by engineers and the Virginia State Police.
