Hillary Clinton makes Earth Day pitch to save the elephants

Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance Saturday night at the Tribeca Film Festival and talked about saving elephants from poaching.

As an unannounced panelist for the eight-minute virtual-reality film, “The Protectors: Walk in the Rangers’ Shoes,” Clinton, in a discussion with Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, talked about her work to combat the illegal ivory market as secretary of state and for the Clinton Global Initiative.

“We’ve got to bust this market so it can’t come back,” she said, according to the Associated Press.

Clinton not only singled out China for being the largest market for illegal ivory, but also the U.S. for being the next biggest. “So China is going to be a key player but we are, too,” she said.

The event Saturday took place on Earth Day, which Clinton noted while paying homage to the hundreds of demonstrations worldwide that were part of the March for Science. “We are marching on behalf of science,” she said.

“And part of science is understanding the intricate relationships that we share with all those on this planet and particularly large mammals like elephants, who have a role to play both in reality and in our imaginations,” Clinton said.

On Twitter, Clinton asked her followers to donate to African Parks to support rangers who protect elephants.
