Blizzard in the Plains brings post-Christmas travel to a halt

Though most of the United States went without a white Christmas, a blizzard in the Plains made up the difference, jeopardizing post-Christmas travel in the region.

North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and parts of Kansas will be hit to varying degrees by a winter storm by Wednesday night, according to a map from the National Weather Service. The storm began on Monday and will intensify, bringing ice, high winds, freezing rain, and snow. The storm has brought travel in the Plains to a halt at one of the busiest times of the year.

“The ongoing major winter storm will continue and intensify tonight,” the weather service wrote on Monday. “Blizzard conditions with heavy snow and gusty winds are expected, with damaging icing also likely in some areas. Travel will be dangerous to impossible at times.”

The weather conditions vary across different parts of the storm, with North Dakota and South Dakota facing the highest ice accumulation, followed by Minnesota. Though largely covered by the winter storm, Nebraska is forecast to be mostly spared of the ice. Colorado has already received over a foot of snow, and Wyoming received a similar amount.

The Nebraska State Patrol’s X, formerly known as Twitter, account posted images of some weather-related crashes on Christmas, advising people to only travel if necessary.
