Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in quarantine after “having come into contact” with someone infected with the coronavirus, State Department officials announced.
“The Secretary has been tested and is negative,” a State Department spokesperson said Wednesday. “In accordance with CDC guidelines, he will be in quarantine.”
Pompeo is the latest member of President Trump’s national security team to quarantine after an exposure. Several senior Defense Department leaders took the same step in October after the Coast Guard’s vice commandant tested positive. Pompeo had resumed his travel schedule in recent months, hedged by regular coronavirus tests.
“He is being closely monitored by the Department’s medical team,” the spokesperson said.
State Department leaders have not appeared to have the same difficulty managing the coronavirus as the White House team.
“For reasons of privacy, we can’t identify” the coronavirus patient to whom Pompeo was exposed, the State Department spokesperson added.
