The Trump administration said Tuesday it’s confident that House Republicans will come together to pass the American Health Care Act when it hits the floor for a vote on Thursday.
“[Trump] continues to meet with members and walk away with a very optimistic view of where the bill is headed,” White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters. “We feel very good going into the final stretch.”
Spicer said the president’s Tuesday morning visit to Capitol Hill attracted “a huge sign of support” for the healthcare bill, which saw additional changes late Wednesday evening and could be amended again before Thursday’s vote.
“These are a truly conservative set of principles that we are fighting for,” Spicer said of the healthcare legislation. “If you are conservative who has been fighting for repeal and replace, this is your chance.”
Several conservative lawmakers remain opposed to the legislation, and say it doesn’t go far enough to free the healthcare industry from the government. Meanwhile, the free-market group like Club for Growth has launched ad buys in several members’ districts, urging them not to vote for the AHCA.
“I think the president will continue to engage with members, he will continue to do that all the way through Thursday,” Spicer said.
