Chris Matthews plays Hardball, Stephen Colbert would prefer Unbreakaball, and he wound up with Teeball.
The host of The Colbert Report introduced on Thursday’s show a spin-off of CNN’s recently reintroduced Crossfire — a program that “practically invented people yelling incoherently at each other” — catered toward a younger demographic. The opposing debaters: Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, with Colbert serving as moderator.
“Pointless Counter Pointless” went just about like one would expect, since it was conducted entirely in Sesame speak.
“Tonight, we’re debating the most controversial topics of our time, starting with the letter ‘s’,” Colbert began. “It’s taken some criticism lately for looking like a scary snake. Big Bird, what say you?”
“Oh, I like the letter ‘s’,” the lovable, oversized anthropomorphic bird replied. “Lots of great things start with ‘s’, like sunshine and sailboats, Stephen. And Stephen — your name starts with ‘s’!”
On a different argumentative show, Oscar may have replied that ‘s’ was a throwaway letter, and talked up a letter like ‘o’. Not here.
“Stephen, I like the letter ‘s’,” Oscar said in agreement with Big Bird after Colbert asked of his thoughts. “So many grouchy words start with ‘s’, like smelly, and slimy, stinky, and sesquipedalianism.”
Colbert protested the accord.
“The whole idea of the show is disagreement, OK?” Colbert made clear. “I need you to argue.”
Did he have any luck? Watch to find out.
