Speaking in more of a lecturer’s tone than usual, Donald Trump advised supporters in Wisconsin to surround themselves with unsuccessful people during a Wednesday rally.
During a lengthy talk about success, Trump remarked to supporters that it’s smart to surround yourself with “unsuccessful people” because they will “respect you” if you are successful. Trump’s event Wednesday was held at St. Norbert College in Green Bay.
“You’ll find when you become very successful, the people you will like best are the people that are less successful than you, because when you go to a table, you can tell them all these wonderful stories and they’ll sit back and listen,” Trump said.
Always be around unsuccessful people because everybody will respect you,” he added, asking the crowd “do you understand that?”
The comment came during a long riff about success, during which Trump talked about the importance of luck and momentum — specifically about a friend he deemed “just an unlucky guy.”
On a few occasions during the speech, Trump broke from his docile tone to hit some of his opponents past and present, particularly Sen. Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who endorsed Cruz on Tuesday.
Early in the address, the billionaire continued hitting the GOP, telling attendees that he believes the Republican Party “hasn’t treated me properly,” piggybacking on comments Trump made during Tuesday’s CNN town hall when he renewed his threat to not to back the eventual GOP nominee.
The real estate mogul also touched on the situation involving his campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who was charged Tuesday with simple battery after he grabbed former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields after the GOP front-runner’s March 8 press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump said that he’d be as loyal to America as he is to Lewandowski.
“Folks — as your president, you need somebody that’s going to be loyal to the country and to yourselves. You need somebody that’s going to fight,” Trump said.
