Billionaire Donald Trump is more trusted to handle economic issues and immigration than Democratic presidential
Forty-eight percent of voters believe Trump would do better than Clinton in stimulating economic growth and job creation as president. Thirty-nine percent said they trust Clinton more and 14 percent were undecided. The GOP candidate, who’s pledged to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border if he’s elected president, is also more trusted than his Democratic opponent to handle the issue of immigration — 49 percent of voters trust Trump compared to 38 percent who trust Clinton.
While Trump and Clinton are virtually tied (44-43 percent) when it comes to the percentage of voters who trust in their ability to handle national security, the former secretary of state leads Trump on a handful of contentious social issues.
On abortion, same-sex marriage and religious freedom issues, Clinton leads Trump 44-38 percent as the more trusted candidate. The former first lady also bests her GOP opponent on environmental issues — 46 percent to 35 percent, while 20 percent of voters were unsure of which candidate they trust more on that issue. While Clinton has applauded President Obama’s recent efforts to address environmental issues like climate change, Trump has said he “believe[s] in weather,” and has criticized Obama for prioritizing climate change as a major issue.
Breaking the results down by gender, men trust Trump more than Clinton in every category, with the exception of the environment where the two 2016 contenders are tied, and women trust Clinton more on every issue but immigration. Among voters under age 40, Clinton is more trusted on every issue, but approximately one in five voters under 40 were undecided in every category.
The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted Feb. 11-14 and contains a margin of error plus or minus 3 percent.
