A new billboard welcoming visitors to “Florida: The Sunshine ‘Don’t Say Gay or Trans’ State. is seen Thursday, April 21, 2022, in Orlando, Fla. Billboards, which are being placed in key areas with high visitor traffic and visibility, are part of a new advertising campaign launched by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

Celebrities often threaten to leave the country if things don’t go their way. Unsurprisingly, most individuals who declare they’ll leave out of disgust, more often than not,
don’t commit
to their statements. Once emotions settle down, one realization remains: Americans have it pretty good, despite our differences.

The same can be said for those who take issue with Gov. Ron DeSantis.

INSIDE RON DESANTIS’S WAR WITH THE COLLEGE BOARD OVER AP AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES

Not only is the popular Florida governor an effective leader, but he’s also not a monstrous, anti-gay authoritarian as leftists love to claim. A quick
search
reveals that some Democrats and their media counterparts are certain DeSantis isn’t only as bad as former President Donald Trump, but worse. This is puzzling, considering too many on the Left treat Donald Trump as akin to Hitler. Somehow, DeSantis has surpassed the very definition of the ultimate evil to become even eviler. And all because he governs in a conservative and unapologetic manner.

In March 2022, DeSantis
signed
the Parental Rights in Education law. Critics call it the “Don’t Say Gay” law in an
obvious effort
to label the governor and other Republicans in the Sunshine State as hateful toward the LGBTQ community. The label quickly grew to define the bill even though it misrepresents it.

As
others
have noted, the law is
not homophobic
but “prohibit[s] a school district from encouraging classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels.” This is nothing more than common sense and meeting the emotional, physical, and mental needs of students at this young, highly impressionable age. It does not cater to the whims of adults who wish to push an agenda. This is a good thing.

Despite the truth of the law, some Floridians are now considering leaving the state as a result. As
reported
by the Hill, “56 percent of LGBTQ parents surveyed said they were considering leaving Florida over concerns about how the new law may impact their children and family. Another 17 percent said they had already taken steps to do so.”

Another
article
titled “LGBTQ+ families mull leaving Florida in wake of new culture laws” quotes a husband and father who said, “That Parental Rights bill was the most disheartening because we’re parents, too. Every night we hope that things will change here, but at this point, it literally feels like we are fleeing persecution.”

The hyperbolic articles treat Florida as a state with growing intolerance toward anyone in the LGBTQ community. To say the Parental Rights in Education law is close to oppression, however, is to misconstrue the legislation in an attempt to create a sense of victimhood. There is nothing wrong with shielding children from the kinds of discussions that will only confuse, not educate, them.

Parents of all orientations are more than welcome to have discussions in the confines of their own homes about a variety of subjects. But pushing talk of sexuality and gender onto young children in a public school setting is both unfair and unwise. Bills such as this are nothing close to persecution, but such facts are far too inconvenient. The dishonesty surrounding this legislation has now been in place for a year. The architects of that narrative aren’t about to be truthful.

Americans of all political stripes are certainly free to move elsewhere if they so choose. We live in a land where everyone is welcome to create lives for themselves and their families. No one — certainly not DeSantis — is standing in the way of those decisions.

The reality is that the Parental Rights in Education law helps to ensure that children in their younger years are kept from mature and confusing indoctrination. Leftists are eager to create an alternate version of life in Florida where such a logical measure is “abuse” and the catalyst for a literal exodus by marginalized people. It’s not grounded thinking, but that’s the point. Painting Gov. Ron DeSantis as an unsympathetic enemy of diversity is the goal, especially as his national appeal continues to grow.
