What does Newt Gingrich believe on the unborn?

A group called Iowa Pro-Life Action sent out robo-calls around Iowa attacking Newt: “Gingrich used his power as Speaker of the House to fight FOR abortion rights for women in nearly all cases.”

Some pro-lifers reject these claims. Steve Ertelt at LifeNews writes:

The calls are inaccurate, as Gingrich compiled a 98.6 percent pro-life voting record on pro-life issues ranging from abortion to embryonic research during his time in Congress. For the 20 years that Gingrich served in Congress (1979-1999), Gingrich supported the pro-life position in 70 out of 71 votes.
Gingrich voted in favor of a ban on partial-birth abortion and also voted to cut federal funding to organizations that perform or promote abortions abroad, including the United Nations Population Fund, which is complicit in carrying out China’s One Child Policy. In addition, Gingrich supported restrictions on funding for assisted suicide.

But Ertelt then wades into muddy waters when he cites Gingrich’s recent statement that “life begins at conception.” This water is murky, because Gingrich was responding to a furor over his statements that life actually begins at implantation of an embryo — which is a position, I’ll note, that sounds good to biotech companies who want to experiment on embryos in petri dishes and to makers of various morning-after pills that may “prevent” pregnancy by prohibiting fertilized eggs from implanting.

Pro-lifers aren’t of one mind about Newt’s stance towards the unborn. Then again, neither is Newt.
