Politics can be tough, but baseball among politicians is downright ugly. It is time for the annual Congressional Baseball Game once again on Thursday, bringing with it a history of crazy injuries.
Past wounds include a shattered arm (Rep. Mike Oxley, 1994), dislocated shoulder (Rep. Kevin Brady, 2003) and fractured arch (Rep. Elton Gallegly, 1989).
But Rep. Louie Gohmert, who suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in 2008, during a collision at the plate with Rep. Joe Baca, isn’t afraid to get back in the ring.
“It’s one night a year that we can be like kids, and people cheer,” Gohmert told Yeas & Nays. He joked that Congress usually does not get cheered while acting like children.
The Texas representative has been practicing with his fellow Republicans every morning at 6:45 for two months in anticipation of Thursday’s game. He has no regrets about the play at the plate that destroyed his knee.
“I scored, the run counted and we won the game by one run,” Gohmert said proudly.
