Filmmakers host subjects of Oscar-nominated film

War/Dance redux

Local filmmakers Sean and Andrea Fine continue to live the topic of their Academy Award nominated documentary, “War/Dance.”

In early July, the couple screened the film in front of 7,000 people at a refugee camp in Uganda, where the film was set. And when they returned, Dominic Akena and John Okello, two of the young musicians featured in the movie, came back with them. After staying in Michigan for a few weeks, where they played at Michael Moore’s film festival, they traveled back to Washington to stay with the Fines.

Sean Fine told us they’ve been showing the kids around Washington, taking them to museums and Rehoboth Beach. “They had a blast swimming in the ocean,” he said. “They had never been in the ocean before.”

And this Thursday, Akena and Okello will be the guests of honor at an exclusive fundraiser at the Meridian House. The children will play with celebrated Ugandan musician Samite at the event, which will benefit a Ugandan scholarship fund that puts kids through high school.

Finally, said Fine, Akena will be going to boarding school in Canada this fall. And while he’s on this side of the Atlantic, the Fines will serve as his legal guardians.
