After the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the Pentagon, Linda Souder and the members of the Burke, Va., Quilters Guild felt like they had to do something. They decided to do what they do best — make a quilt, this one in memory of those who lost their lives that day.
Souder and other members of the guild presented the Pentagon with the 144-square quilt on Sept. 6, 2002, to be hung in a chapel in the Defense Department headquarters for a one-year anniversary service. It was hung in the chapel on that day. By Sept. 7, it was gone, and has not been seen since.
