Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is facing a tough Republican primary race in his bid for reelection.
Raffensperger sparked the ire of former President Donald Trump by refusing to back his unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him and faces a Trump-backed primary challenger, Rep. Jody Hice.
PROXY VOTING LIKELY FINISHED IF REPUBLICANS WIN MIDTERM ELECTIONS
A recent Landmark Communications, Inc./ WGCL-TV poll of likely Republican voters in Georgia found Hice leading the primary race at 34.7%, with Raffensperger at 18.3% and other challengers trailing them both. A full third of voters polled remain undecided ahead of the March 24 primary.
Lance Dutson, Raffensperger’s campaign spokesman, told the Washington Examiner, “Congressman Hice can hide behind fake polls and political endorsements, but nothing can hide the fact that he accomplished nothing in Congress, and did nothing to secure our elections.”
“Brad took a stand to make Georgia’s elections the safest in the nation, and we’re confident the people of Georgia will stand with Brad on Election Day,” Dutson said.
In a statement to WGCL, Hice said, “While these numbers are encouraging, we are not underestimating the work required to defeat a statewide incumbent. Congressman Hice, along with the help of over 2,000 volunteers, is working daily to ensure every Georgia voter fully understands the abysmal job Brad Raffensperger has done as our Secretary of State. We look forward to renewing integrity in our elections.”
But another recent poll for the Hill by Emerson College found Raffensperger leading the Republican field for secretary of state at 29%, followed by Hice at 26% and 37% undecided. That poll also found Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp leading his Trump-backed primary opponent, former Sen. David Purdue.
Raffensperger’s website highlights his record on “election integrity,” arguing he “is the first and only Georgia Secretary of State to conduct a full citizenship check of our voter rolls, making sure that Georgians and only Georgians are voting in our elections.”
