The federal government approved Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s request for federal funds to help 22 local governments pay for $39 million in storm-related emergency costs and damage to government property caused by Hurricane Irene.
McDonnell requested the funding on Friday for cities including Williamsburg, Richmond, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The money will go to governments, not individuals, though McDonnell said he will request individual aid next week if it is determined the state is eligible.
