Elizabeth Warren bombs Democratic debate's first question

Once again on Wednesday, Elizabeth Warren showed why Democrats are reluctant to provide her an early coronation as their presidential nominee.

Receiving the honor of the debate’s first question, Warren was asked whether and how she would persuade Republican senators to support impeachment. It was a good question from co-moderator Rachel Maddow because it speaks to the reality of math beyond the noise of the impeachment proceedings. If Democrats want to convict Trump, they need two-thirds of the Senate to support that vote. And to persuade those Republicans, Democrats need to engage with them and address their specific concerns.

It matters because any objective assessment would suggest Democrats are far away from that magic supermajority.

But Warren blew her answer. She would persuade Republican colleagues, she said, by telling them to re-read the Mueller report.

Tragically, Warren wasn’t joking.

That platitude answer, designed only to mobilize the left of the Democratic Party, speaks volumes about Warren’s candidacy. She is not a candidate for bipartisan compromise. She is not a candidate who has any real concern for winning back the states that saw Trump win the White House in 2016. Instead, Warren is the candidate for sad class warfare politics, bad policies, and extremely bad math.

Somehow Warren and her supporters believe this will be enough to see her take victory next November. It’s all very silly.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Trump should pray that Warren is the Democratic nominee.
