House Speaker Paul Ryan said the House would take up a Senate bill to turn Obamacare into a block grant program to states if the Senate can find the 50 votes needed to pass it next week.
“If the Senate acts, we will act,” Ryan said during a Miami press conference during a tour of hurricane damage in Florida.
The bill could get a Senate vote next week. Authored by Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Bill Cassidy, R-La., the legislation would convert Obamacare funding into block grants to the states, giving them control over what to do with healthcare.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said through a spokesman Wednesday it is his “intention” to bring the Graham-Cassidy measure to the floor for a vote ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline next week.
But Republicans face potential opposition from Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, John McCain, R-Ariz., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, which would sink the bill.
