Poll: Only 13 percent expect Melania Trump to be ‘excellent’ first lady

Incoming first lady Melania Trump will be going up against tougher public expectations than her predecessor Michelle Obama, according to a new poll.

A McClatchy-Marist poll released Thursday found 13 percent of U.S. adults expect Trump to do an “excellent” job in her role, compared to 30 percent who said the same about Obama eight years ago.

One-quarter of adults said Trump will be a “poor” first lady in the Dec. 1-9 poll, while only one-in-10 said the same about Obama, the first black first lady.

Trump has pledged to tackle cyberbullying as first lady. But she will break precedent with other first ladies by not moving into the White House with her husband and son, Barron, and will stay in Manhattan through the end of the school year before relocating with Barron to Washington next summer.

Trump worked as a model after emigrating to the U.S. two decades ago. Some of her modeling included nude or same-sex photoshoots, which could be a factor in Americans’ opinion of her as a mother and first lady.

More than 1,000 adults nationwide were polled by landline or cell phone. The surveys had a margin of error from 3.1 to 3.3 percent.
