Former first lady Michelle Obama and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, met in private for the first time in London on Monday, talking at length during a secret “power meeting” about their shared passion for advocating for women’s issues, including the education of young girls, according to a report.
The pair spoke after the American actress-turned-British duchess attended Obama’s book tour stop at London’s Royal Festival Hall to promote her best-selling memoir, Becoming, the Evening Standard reported Tuesday. The duchess attended the event in a private capacity, the palace confirmed to the outlet.
The two women talked about pregnancy and raising children. The duchess is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry in the spring. The royal couple married at Windsor Castle in May.
Monday’s meeting comes after Obama told Good Housekeeping in an interview Sunday that her “biggest piece of advice” for Markle “would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything.”
“What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that — and I think Meghan can [maximize] her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” Obama said.
Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama forged a warm, friendly working relationship with Prince Harry while they were in the White House, including supporting the Invictus Games, his initiative for injured or sick military personnel and veterans. The British prince also interviewed the 44th president when he served as a guest editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today program.
