Kavanaugh friend apologizes for naming possible assault suspect

President of the Ethics and Public Policy Center Ed Whelan on Friday apologized for identifying a classmate of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as the person who could have sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Kavanaugh of assault.

“I made an appalling and inexcusable mistake of judgment in posting the tweet thread in a way that identified Kavanaugh’s Georgetown Prep classmate. I take full responsibility for that mistake, and I deeply apologize for it. I realize that does not undo the mistake,” Whelan posted to Twitter Friday.

Whelan posted a lengthy Twitter thread on Thursday, which is now deleted, in which he used Ford’s description of the incident and geographical locations from a Georgetown Preparatory School yearbook to posit that she may have been assaulted at a house where Kavanaugh’s classmate at Georgetown Prep lived.

He also included photographs of Kavanaugh next to that classmate, Chris Garrett, to show how they look alike, under the theory that Ford may have confused Garrett for Kavanaugh.

Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her 36 years ago at a gathering where five people, including herself, were present. Although she never mentioned Garrett, who lived in the residence, she did name Kavanaugh and two other male classmates, and said the fifth attendee was a girl.
