Rebecca Friedrichs, an elementary school veteran teacher of almost 30 years and plaintiff in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, knows from experience that teachersâ unions are the number-one corrupting force in education.
Her new book, Standing Up to Goliath, features testimonies of teachers, parents, and kids who have been harmed by the state and national teachersâ unions.
âIf people read this book and find out what is really going on, they will find out that every single problem in our schools is related to the teachersâ union,â Friedrichs told Red Alert Politics in a phone interview.
The national face of restoring the authority of parents and teachers in schools, Friedrichs recounts that she was forced to fund state and national teachersâ unions whose political causes and values she did not support.
âThe state and national unions are the drivers behind abusive sex-ed curriculum, dangerous discipline policies, attacks on our countryâs history, exceptionalism, and Judeo-Christian values,â Friedrichs stated.
The book delves into the National Education Association and California Teachersâ Association’s covert push for a controversial sex-ed curriculum in California public schools.
âThe unionsâ sexual agenda is pushed onto students as young as five…the reason inappropriate sex education curriculums are entering our schools is that the NEA RA operates more like a political action committee for the Democratic Partyâs social agenda than a teachersâ association,â Friedrichs writes in chapter nine.
According to Friedrichs, the recent resolutions at the 2017 NEA convention included âeducation about homosexual activity in schools using materials from the [Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network],â âa Gender-Inclusive schools toolkit,â and âall transgender students should be able to use the bathroom or locker room of their choice.â
The CTA also pushed for âthe California Healthy Youth Act,â which requires schools to provide sex education to students in grades 7-12 while almost simultaneously amending the state education code to make it difficult for parents to opt out.
At the discretion of teachers, lessons on topics such as transgenderism may be taught as early as kindergarten in California, according to Friedrichs. She catalogs an incident involving a teacher reading a book about transgenderism in her class, after which a child changed from boy to girl clothing. Parents were horrified, yet they had no ally in the union or local school board, as both had been involved in lobbying for the original act and curriculum. In the end, that teacher ended up winning a âTeacher of the Yearâ award, possibly due to her progressive curriculum.
After exposing how the unions promote a culture of fear, coercion, and progressive values among those they supposedly represent, Friedrichsâ current goal is to empower teachers. She created the âadopt a teacher program,â which educates teachers about how to stand up for themselves and their values.
Friedrichs argues that âteachers have to decertify from the state, local, and national unions and then re-establish local associations,â as these will protect them when they are forced to teach things they know are controversial, rather than simply lobby for national political causes. She also founded a nonprofit, For Kids and Country, to further these efforts.
âItâs really scary … the unions are trying to change our culture through our youth,â Friedrichs said. âAmericaâs teachers, parents, and kids deserve better. If we want freedom, weâre going to have to fight for it.â
