Mark Zuckerberg to testify April 11 before House panel on Facebook data breach

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee April 11 about how Cambridge Analytica was able to access users’ data from the giant social media site, according to the committee.

This will be Zuckerberg’s first appearance before Congress following the backlash the tech giant has faced over the data breach.

“This hearing will be an important opportunity to shed light on critical consumer data privacy issues and help all Americans better understand what happens to their personal information online,” said Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore., and ranking member Frank Pellone, D-N.J.

Zuckerberg will be facing questions about Facebook’s past actions and future intentions to protect users’ personal information.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone told the Washington Examiner conversations with other congressional committees are ongoing about their requests for Zuckerberg to testify.

The CEO of the social media site did not originally intend to appear before Congress, but Facebook officials said he had to testify due to outside pressures from U.S. government, media, and the general public.
