Facing a leftward battle in the Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton’s camp has sent out signals that they’re happy about Monday’s win by Canada’s Liberal Party, and their likely new prime minister Justin Trudeau.
The praise of Trudeau from Clinton’s camp seems odd, since, while both are not as far to the left as Bernie Sanders or Canada’s New Democratic Party, the two have some distinct differences.
KEYSTONE XL PIPELINE
After years of waffling, Clinton now opposes it. Trudeau supports it.
MARIJUANA
Clinton’s position is still unclear, but disappointing for marijuana advocates. Trudeau added legalization to the Liberal Party’s platform and wants it legalized “right away.”
WAR ON ISIS
Hillary is a defender of Obama’s airstrike strategy. Trudeau wants to withdraw from the fight, and provide humanitarian assistance.
In her quest to ward off Bernie Sanders from the left, praising Trudeau might be a vain attempt to associate the un-cool candidate with the cool new guy. But doing so might have some risks.
