Candidate says Democrats ‘will lose 48 states’ if they back ending private health insurance

Democratic 2020 candidate Tim Ryan says President Trump would wipe out his opponent if the other candidate proposes eliminating private health insurance in favor of “Medicare for all.”

“If our nominee is talking about taking private healthcare away, I think we’ll lose 48 states,” the Ohio congressman said moments after leaving the debate stage Tuesday night in Detroit.

During the contest, Ryan repeatedly pushed back against Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and their plans to take away private health insurance from all Americans and replace it with government-sponsored coverage. Ryan asserted that his fellow candidates were proposing ideas that lacked appeal for most Americans, who would want to keep their private health insurance.

He also expressed concern that moderate voters will be turned off by plans to provide free healthcare to undocumented immigrants, as several other candidates have proposed.

“We can’t be paying for undocumented people to get free healthcare while every American is asked to pay for their healthcare,” Ryan said.
