Mikulski car buyer amendment fails

An amendment unveiled by Sen. Barbara Mikulski last week, which would have made interest on auto loans for some new cars tax-deductible, failed amid opposition from Senate Republicans Wednesday.

The amendment would have made loan interest and state taxes on cars purchased through the end of next year by buyers meeting certain criteria. This week, Republicans objected to broader bailout measures for the American auto manufacturers, including Mikulski’s amendment.

“Here we are again fiddling and diddling to a parliamentary tune, engulfed in more shenanigans and quagmire,” Mikulski said on the Senate floor Thursday.
