California Democratic state Sen. Scott Wiener introduced a bill that would force new cars to be equipped with speed-limited technology.
The legislation would mandate technology preventing vehicles from driving more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. He announced the bill as part of the wider SAFER California Streets legislative package, laying out his argument in a post on X.
“CA, like the U.S., is in the midst of a spike in road deaths,” Wiener said. “Deaths are up 19% nationally & 22% in CA in past few years. 4,400 people die on CA roads each year. If the U.S. had similar safety policies to other wealthy nations, 25k fewer people would die on our roads each year.”
He pointed out that his proposal isn’t new and that the technology has already been created.
“This speed limiting technology already exists. The European Union is moving in this direction & the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended adopting the requirement nationally,” the San Francisco Democrat continued. “The EU has mandated truck side guards in certain circumstances, but the U.S. has not.”

The requirement for implementing the technology would begin for all vehicles made past 2027.
“No one has a constitutional or a God-given right to drive dangerously and put people’s lives at risk,” Wiener explained to Politico. “It’s horrifying how many pedestrians are being seriously injured or dying.”
