Maggie McEvoy wants students to recognize the power of their voices on the Carroll County School Board.

“Instead of just discussing the issues, I like acting on the issues,” said McEvoy, 17, of Woodbine.

She was selected by the Carroll County Student Government Association and will serve as the student board representative during the 2006-07 school year.

McEvoy expects to address balancing the need to build new schools with renovating older ones during the next school year.

“I?d really like to encourage [the board] not to focus solely on building new schools,” she said.

Gary Bauer, board vice president, said board members are looking forward to working with McEvoy.

“We?ve always enjoyed working with student members. They give us the opinions of what the students in the system are thinking and their reactions to our policies and decisions,” he said.

McEvoy is “a very articulate young lady with lots of energy,” said Estelle Sanzenbacher, adult adviser to the CCSGA, which is the countywide student government organization.

She has served as a class officer of the Student Government Association at her high school and was also a delegate to CCSGA.

For the past seven months, McEvoy has studied board policy and issues by working with the previous student board representative Brendan Schlauch.

Her extracurricular activities include participating in the National Honor Society and competing on the tennis team.

After she graduates, McEvoy plans to go to college and study international relations.

But for now, she?s focused on the School Board.

“I?m excited to take on the position, and I hope that I?m able to do a good job and accomplish things,” she said.
