Clinton confidante: Server was probably hacked

One of Hillary Clinton’s top confidantes “wouldn’t be surprised” if the former secretary of state’s private email server had been hacked, he said this week.

“Well, I think the answer is there is no evidence that the server, so far, hasn’t been hacked but wouldn’t be surprised if it had been hacked. I think that’s what the campaign and Mrs. Clinton has said,” Lanny Davis told Washington, D.C.’s WMAL on Thursday. Davis served as President Bill Clinton’s White House counsel from 1996-98 and remains a friend of the Clintons.

The comments came during a discussion about Guccifer, a hacker who discovered Clinton’s personal [email protected]“>[email protected] by accessing an account that belonged to Clinton aide Sidney Blumenthal in 2013. Guccifer was recently extradited by the U.S. from Romania to Virginia, likely because of that connection to Clinton.

However, Davis reaffirmed, there was no evidence that it had been hacked. “I wouldn’t be surprised because the federal government itself has been hacked, but as of now, no, it hasn’t been hacked.”

The server was subject to phishing attempts by countries including China, Germany, Russia and South Korea. While they may not have been successful, how they discovered the email address at all is another question.

Former NSA director retired Gen. Michael Hayden said last month that it was unlikely the server had not been hacked. “I would lose respect for scores of intelligence organizations around the planet if they were not already thumbing through the emails,” he said. “I would move heaven and Earth as the director of NSA to get the unclassified emails of several foreign ministers.”
