Media accuse Trump of being a religious phony at George H.W. Bush’s funeral

Some in the press criticized President Trump and first lady Melania Trump for not reciting the Apostles’ Creed during former President George H.W. Bush’s funeral service.

All the former presidents and their wives could be seen reciting the creed, a key statement of Christian belief, but the Trumps stood silent.

Mediaite columnist John Ziegler pointed out the move by Trump and accused him of not knowing the words.

“It’s SO weird that Barack Obama (the ‘Muslim’) knew all the words to the Apostles’ Creed, and Donald Trump (the Evangelical hero) didn’t know any of them, and didn’t even bother to read them,” the columnist tweeted.

Trump identifies as Presbyterian. Typically, Presbyterians recite the Apostles’ Creed during Sunday service. Many evangelical leaders came out in support of Trump during his presidential run, and a large part of his base of supporters was made up of the evangelical community.

Other journalists and media figures and outlets criticized Trump for standing silent, including reporters from Newsweek, CBS, and others.

One freelance journalist, whose work has been published in the Young Turks and Medium, asked his followers if Trump’s silence confirmed he is the Antichrist.

“It would appear that unlike every other president, Trump did not recite the Apostles’ creed. Anti-christ, confirmed?” Michael Tracey posted to Twitter.

Trump and all four living former presidents were in attendance of the elder Bush’s funeral Wednesday.

The 41st president died Friday at the age of 94, and he is being transported to Texas to be buried near to his wife, Barbara, and daughter Robin, who died at the age of 3, on Texas A&M University’s campus.
