Super Bowl 2024: Record 68 million expected to bet on game — with $23 billion on the line

More than a quarter of adults in the country are expected to bet on the 2024 Super Bowl this year, with an expected $23.1 billion set to be wagered, according to a report.

The American Gambling Association estimates that 67.8 million adults will bet on the NFL’s championship game, which will see the Kansas City Chiefs attempt to win their second consecutive Super Bowl championship. The number of people expected to place bets on the Super Bowl is up 35% from 2023, with an estimated $7.1 billion more expected to be wagered this year compared to 2023.

The first NFL Super Bowl in “Sin City” comes as the legalization of sports betting has been on the rise in recent years. Currently, 38 states and the District of Columbia offer legal sports betting of some form, with 27 of those states and D.C. offering online sports betting.

“As the Super Bowl comes to Las Vegas for the first time, this year’s record interest in wagering marks a full circle moment for the U.S. gaming industry,” AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said in a statement. “Our priority remains getting this opportunity right by providing the consumer protections only a regulated market can guarantee and investing in responsible gambling tools, safeguards and education.”

The group estimates that 42.7 million adults will place bets through online or retail sportsbooks or with a bookie, while 36.5 million people are estimated to place a casual bet with friends or participate in a pool or squares contest.

It also estimates that bettors are split on who they believe will win, with more (47%) betting that the Chiefs will repeat as champions of the NFL.

Online sports betting has seen a recent boom in legalization in the South, with Florida relaunching online sports betting late last year and North Carolina set to launch it in March.

Super Bowl LVIII is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. EST from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday. The game will be televised by CBS, with a child-oriented broadcast available on Nickelodeon.
