Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed on Wednesday that special counsel Robert Hur has completed his report on President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents, and Garland indicated that he plans to release the report in redacted form in the coming days.
According to a public letter he wrote to the top members of the Senate and House Judiciary committees, Garland said Biden’s personal and office counsel were still reviewing the report.
Garland said he would release “as much” of the report as he could once the privilege review was complete and once he had submitted the report to Congress.
“As I have made clear regarding each Special Counsel who has served since I have taken office, I am committed to making as much of the Special Counsel’s report public as possible, consistent with legal requirements and Department policy,” Garland wrote.
Garland appointed Hur to investigate Biden in January 2023, days after CBS reported that the Department of Justice was investigating documents with classified markings that were found at Biden’s office in Washington, D.C., from when he was vice president.
After the initial report, Biden’s counsel revealed that the president’s personal lawyers had also discovered documents with classified markings in the garage of his home in Wilmington.
Biden did not disclose any information to the public about the matter until the initial media report in January of last year, but his counsel said at the time that the president’s personal lawyers had first discovered the documents in question in early November 2022, days before the midterm elections.

The revelation that a classified documents debacle was brewing under the public’s radar for more than two months prompted widespread concern about Biden’s lack of transparency on the matter.
White House spokesman Ian Sams said he expects that the review by Biden’s lawyers of Hur’s report will be completed by the end of the week.
