Biden huddles with House Democrats to plot 2024 ‘reintroduction’ to public

LEESBURG, Virginia — President Joe Biden will meet with House Democrats at their annual retreat to preview the party’s plan of attack for the 2024 cycle as the White House turns its attention away from the primary election and toward the general.

Biden is set to meet with Democrats at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, Virginia, on Thursday to discuss the president’s action plan after Super Tuesday on March 5, on which more than a dozen states will hold their primary contests. His campaign is framing that date as the informal end of the primary cycle, turning their focus instead to the November election.

Biden will be joined by a number of senior campaign officials, including Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Quentin Fulks, Mitch Landrieu, Louisa Terrell, and Jen O’Malley Dillon. The president’s team will meet with House Democrats to discuss Biden’s general election message heading into the 2024 cycle, the campaign’s efforts to mobilize the Biden-Harris coalition up and down the ballot, and efforts to boost voter turnout in November.

“Together, President Biden, Vice President Harris, and House Democrats have delivered on a historic agenda for the American people,” Rodriguez told the Washington Examiner in a statement. “Democrats up and down the ballot know the stakes of this year’s election, and are ready to run and win together this November on a winning agenda that fights for the middle class, protects our rights, and stands up for our democracy.”

House Democrats met on Wednesday evening to begin their annual retreat, with party leaders already doing their part to boost Biden’s agenda ahead of his appearance. Biden is also slated to give remarks on Thursday to address lawmakers further on his campaign platform.

The focus of Biden’s briefings will focus on the president’s plans to implement a more aggressive campaign operation in the final months of the 2024 cycle. The president’s campaign has already begun implementing leadership operations in key battleground states and will continue doing so throughout February. Those teams will be tasked with building voter and volunteer engagement to bolster turnout in November.

The meeting comes as Democrats look to boost Biden’s reelection efforts amid high disapproval ratings and a likely rematch against former President Donald Trump, who is currently leading the president in a hypothetical matchup. But Biden’s action plan could give him a leg up on Trump, who must still deal with challenger Nikki Haley in the primary election before turning his attention to Biden and the general election.

House Democrats expressed confidence in Biden’s reelection prospects, looking to the 2024 cycle as an opportunity to reintroduce the president to the electorate — particularly young voters.

“One of the things that I think we have to understand is that President Biden and Kamala Harris started their whole administration in COVID days,” Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) told the Washington Examiner. “He never got a fair start, you know what I mean? He never got the pomp and circumstance of being the president of the United States from the get-go. … It’s been almost four years, three years, but ironically, it’ll give them a chance for kind of a reintroduction.”
