Today is the first day of school for children in Carroll County and many other students in the region. To mark the day, the Carroll County Sheriff?s Office plans to aggressively deal with drivers who pass school buses illegally.
Last year, Carroll Sheriff?s deputies cited 38 drivers for failing to stop behind a school bus with its lights flashing.
Maryland allocates $550,000 annually to law enforcement agencies in the state to prevent motorists from illegally passing school buses. We know you would agree that it is ridiculous that the government has to spend any of our tax dollars on this issue.
Is speed so important that drivers would risk killing a child rather than run five minutes late to an appointment?
If there are any rules to which we as a society can commit, stopping for children to cross safely across the street must be one of them.
Getting caught behind a bus can be frustrating. But every young life is worth the wait.
