Usher gives God credit for halftime show: ‘God answers prayers’

From showgirls to skates, the Super Bowl 2024 halftime show had it all.

Headlined by R&B singer Usher, he began the performance with a dancing rendition of his song “Caught Up” before taking viewers through his songs over the last three decades.

“God answers prayers,” Usher told the crowd in the middle of the show. “They said I wouldn’t make it. They said I wouldn’t make it here today, but I am. Hey, mama, we made it.”

This was Usher’s second Super Bowl performance. In 2011, he appeared alongside the Black Eyed Peas.

Tonight, Will.I.Am was part one of a handful of singers who took part in the show. Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Lil Jon, and Ludacris were also featured in the concert, which was sponsored by Apple Music.

Beyonce was previously the only other black performer to return a second time to headline the Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl’s 58-year history, there have been 27 performances headlined by black musicians, including Prince and Michael Jackson.

Usher is following last year’s performance by Rihanna, which was the most-viewed performance. Rihanna’s performance earned the airing five Emmy nominations.

The eight-time Grammy winner just released a new album ahead of his Past Present Future Tour, which will begin later this year.
